Cool Burn are working with Hunter Water Corporation to plan a mosaic of prescribed burns around critical water supply assets at Tomago NSW. The planned burns would reduce vegetation fuel loads in coastal dune forests surrounding the assets, improving the function of the asset protection zones and reducing bushfire risk.
This prescribed burn plan is a pilot study that would aim to be used more widely across the Hunter Water landholdings.
Hunter Water Corporation manages many critical infrastructure assets across a large land portfolio and bushfire-prone areas.
The natural vegetation is fire-dependent and requires fire management. We prepared a prescribed burn plan and an environmental study to assess the risk, and attain permits and approvals, to conduct the burns safely.
Strategic prescribed burning is an effective land management tool. Combined with other bushfire mitigation measures, provides bushfire preparedness and resilience, ecosystem management, and potential new and valuable jobs in sustainable land and natural resource management.
